Classes
5th, 6th and 7th grade Math
I’m the Math teacher of record for my 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students. We work at an accelerated pace so as cover more content and in greater depth than the regular classroom. A main short term goal is that the students find Math challenging, relevant, and enjoyable. All students are in this class voluntarily. If a student chooses not to participate they may, with parental consent, withdraw. The main long term goal is to give students the content, and maintain the motivation, that will allow these them to access the most rigorous math classes available to them throughout their education. Accordingly, if a student stays at this pace through 7th grade, it should lead them to freshman algebra in 8th grade.
Homework, an estimated half hour of work, will be given all days except Friday. All homework must be completed. If a student falls behind, they will asked to stay after school to catch up.
Tests are given at the end of each topic, which is normally every 2-3 weeks. Any student failing to meet the standard on a test may request a retest if they do so within two days of receiving the original test.
3rd/4th Math
Students in these groups have demonstrated strong potential in Math. They’re are selected through a combination of standardized test scores, teacher and parental recommendation. The main thrust is to take the topics taught in the regular classroom and extend them in a challenging and enjoyable way.
Elementary Writing
Students in these groups have demonstrated strong potential in Language. They’re are selected through a combination of standardized test scores, teacher and parental recommendation. The main goal is to give the student an added opportunity to write and to improve drafts while working one on one with an editor. Further, to allow the student to write for an audience larger than themselves. This could be their class, school, or community.
Elementary Reading
Students in these groups have demonstrated strong potential in Language. They’re are selected through a combination of standardized test scores, teacher and parental recommendation. Lessons in this group use reading material that is above grade level. Students discuss aspects of the material beyond plot and/or content. They are asked to consider ideas that may be inferred and deducted from the literal reading.
